The Encounters – Mga Salubong by Ricardo Magno is a physical theatre monodrama where a young Filipino woman explores her roots through her grandmother’s myth-laced stories. Blending folklore with contemporary themes, the piece delves into identity, migration, political history, and nationhood – blurring the line between memory and myth. Reality is blended with magic and mythology as the grandmother narrates her history, and the audience is left to contemplate which parts are memory and which parts are merely myth.
The Encounters – Mga Salubong is a performance-driven piece of physical theatre that merges folklore with contemporary themes, using a dynamic monodrama structure that investigates identity, political history, migration, and nationhood through the lens of folklore.
“Our aim is to reach the Filipino diaspora and also share our culture to the wider Melbourne audience, as we hope to add Filipino folklore to intercultural storytelling in Australian theatre.” – Ricardo Magno
