Detox Your Home

Hazardous chemicals on a shelf in a garage

June 14, 2025

9:00 am - 3:00 pm
  • Brimbank Council Operations Centre (staff carpark) Stadium Drive, Keilor Park

Throwing hazardous household items in your rubbish bin is dangerous. They may explode, catch fire, leak or mix with other chemicals, either in your bin or in the collection truck or sorting facility. Detox Your Home is a convenient and responsible way to dispose of hazardous chemicals that don’t go in kerbside bins or down household drains.

What you can bring:

Common items accepted include:

  • Fuels and flammable liquids: Petrol, kerosene, diesel, turpentine, methylated spirits, paint thinners

  • Garden chemicals: Fertilisers, weed killers, insect sprays, pesticides, pool chemicals

  • Household items: Bleach, ammonia, oven cleaner, rust remover, cleaning products

  • Automotive: Brake fluid, wax, transmission fluid, body filler

  • Other items: Gas cylinders, aerosol cans (including those with paint), and more.

Find the full list on the Sustainability Victoria accepted items page.

Items no longer accepted:

  • Paint (take to Brimbanks Resource Recovery Centre)

  • Fire extinguishers

  • Cooking oil and cosmetics

  • Empty aerosol cans

  • Motor oil (take to council waste sites)

  • Thermometers/thermostats containing mercury (unless the mercury is sealed in a container)

How it works

Detox Your Home events are staffed by expert chemists who safely identify, sort, and transport collected materials to licensed facilities for processing and disposal.
